What this check tells you

This calculator compares rectangles only. A fit does not tell you about hoop compatibility, the clearance around a design, the fabric, stitch quality, or whether your machine can read a particular file.

The design fits when its width and height are each no larger than the stated field. With rotation allowed, it also checks the dimensions after a 90-degree turn. One inch equals 25.4 millimetres. Nothing is resized, split or edited.

Before you stitch

  1. Read the exact design size in your design file or software, borders and lettering included.
  2. Confirm the usable embroidery field for your machine, hoop and setup in the manufacturer's documentation.
  3. Use the same units for both, or pick the right unit for each.
  4. Treat a fit right at the edge with caution and follow the clearance your manual asks for.
  5. Check the file format your machine reads before you buy a design.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the hoop and the embroidery field?

The hoop is the frame you stretch the fabric in; the field is the area the needle can actually reach inside it, and it is always a little smaller. Use the field from the manual, not the outside size of the hoop.

Does the calculator check the file format?

No. It compares rectangles only. Whether your machine can read a file is in its manual, and the design shop usually lists the formats it sells.

Does the calculator recommend a machine?

No. It only works with the sizes. Below it we link the #1 of each of our rankings, so you can start from a real shortlist.
