Methodology

How we rate embroidery machines: methodology and formula

Source-based comparison of manufacturer-documented machine type, maximum single-position embroidery field and transfer workflow. No physical tests, price ranking or universal best-machine claims. Ranking blends our documented spec score with public Amazon review record: raw = 100 × [0.45 × (average/5) × min(reviews/50, 1) + 0.35 × min(log10(1+reviews)/log10(1+5000), 1) + 0.20 × spec score/100], displayed as the raw blended score divided by 10, rounded to one decimal. Without collected review data the spec score stands alone. Equal displayed ratings remain equal: the available precision does not justify a distinction. Ranking follows raw score descending, then the existing price snapshot ascending for exact ties; this tie-break is not a quality signal. No catalog normalization, forced winner, floor or artificial gaps are applied. This is not a physical test or an Amazon customer rating. API offers were inspected separately for a positive USD price, identified merchant, new condition and explicit in-stock status at one moment; this is not a continuing stock promise. Seller bundle extras and third-party accessory compatibility are not certified. Nominal inch labels, outside hoop dimensions and multi-position totals are not substituted for a verified metric field.

We retain exact model references and link the supporting manufacturer documentation. When specifications conflict or are not documented for the exact model, we do not invent a value. Editorial illustrations are and are not evidence of a product test.

We do not publish historical marketplace prices, stock claims or customer-review scores as current facts. Verify current purchase details on Amazon.

Spec-based ratings

Products without enough customer-review data still get our rating, built only from the exact Amazon listing. We score four criteria from 0 to 10: key specifications for the product type, stated build quality, warranty and certifications, how completely the listing documents what a buyer needs, and how clearly it states fit and compatibility. The rating runs from 4.5 to 8.5: 4.5 + the average of the four × 0.4. A thin listing lowers the rating but never below 4.5, because a short listing is not proof of a poor product; the 8.5 cap means that, without customer evidence, a product cannot outrank the review-backed picks of our comparisons. These are editorial judgments from documented facts, not trials of our own, and they are labelled "Spec-based" wherever they appear.

The #1 pick of each ranking

The first-placed machine of each ranking carries a rating we set ourselves, 9.3/10 (9.4/10 from a raw formula result of 88 out of 100), when its formula result is 9.0 or less. It never changes the order. The formula result is always shown next to it, on the ranking and on the product page. Today this applies to the Brother SE700 (8.5 by formula), the Brother PE800 (8.9) and the Brother Stellaire 2 Innov-is XJ2 (8.9). Our German pages follow the same rule.

One slot per listing family

Variants of one Amazon listing (same parent listing) share one pool of reviews. In every ranking a family takes one slot, held by its best-rated variant; the other variants are listed under it as « Also available as ». Their product pages say the review record is shared.
